What
are firewalls and how can they help your business?
Firewalls protect your
network from intruders by monitoring incoming and outgoing
traffic. They inspect each packet of data travelling
over the network and decide (based on rules) whether
to forward or drop the packet.
Computers have ports
that are basically communication channels. When a program
connects to an open port,
it can transmit data through it. A firewall can block
open ports and make it more difficult for a hacker
to get into your computer.

| FACTORS TO CONSIDER |
|
 |
Firewalls come in all
shapes, sizes and prices. Choosing the right one depends
mainly on your business needs and the size of your
network.
Hardware
or software?
There are two types of firewall. We prefer a hardware
firewall as these are physical devices that connect
to your network and are always present. Software
firewalls, on the other hand, simply run on your
computer and may not load at boot-up, leaving your
computer exposed. They are, however, very good for
monitoring programs that access the Internet. The
most effective solution would be a combination of
both.
Application
access
When a firewall is installed, any applications that
need access to the Internet should be given permission
to do so. This includes virus software, e-mail programs,
web servers and browsers.
Content
filtering
A firewall with content filtering enables
the administrator to block certain websites containing
inappropriate content, such as pornography or racist
material. You can choose the type of access allowed,
and whether all or some employees will have access.
Demilitarised Zones (DMZs)
You need a DMZ if your customer or business partners
need access to your data. A DMZ is a protected information
area on your network. Outsiders can get to the protected
area, but not to the rest of the network. Many firewalls
can do this.
